What is the Guest Teacher Role?

The Guest Teacher role in Canvas has a variety of permissions that allow them to interact with course content, discussions, and students while restricting access to grading and certain administrative controls.

What the Guest Teacher Can Do:

Guest Teachers have permissions that allow them to:

  • View and Send Course Communications:
    • View announcements
    • Send messages to the entire class and individual course members
  • Manage Course Discussions:
    • Create, moderate, post, and view discussions
  • Modify Course Content:
    • Add, edit, and delete items in the course calendar
    • Change course visibility settings
    • Manage assignments, quizzes, course content, files, and sections
    • Manage pages and question banks
  • Oversee Student Groups:
    • View all student groups
    • Manage groups and student collaborations
  • Work with Learning Outcomes and Rubrics:
    • Add, edit, delete, and import learning outcomes
    • Add, edit, and delete rubrics
  • Generate Reports and Access SIS Data:
    • Manage reports
    • Read SIS (Student Information System) data
  • Manage Users:
    • View the list of users in the course
    • Manage students in the course
    • View user login IDs and primary email addresses
  • Utilize Web Conferences:
    • Create web conferences

What the Guest Teacher Cannot Do:

Guest Teachers do not have permissions related to grading or final grade moderation:

  • They cannot edit grades.
  • They cannot select final grades for moderation.
  • They cannot view all grades or audit the grade history.
  • They have limited course management abilities, as indicated by partial access to the "Manage Courses" permission.
