Setting Up a Canvas Assignment for Video Submissions

If you want students to submit a video for an assignment, here’s a simple way to set it up in Canvas.

Step 1: Create a New Assignment

  • In your course, click Assignments in the side menu.

  • Then click + Assignment at the top.

Step 2: Add Assignment Details

  • Give the assignment a title (something like “Video Project” or “Speech Recording”).

  • In the description box, add instructions. Let students know they’ll need to upload or record a video for their submission.

Step 3: Set the Submission Type

  • Scroll down to the Submission Type section.

  • Change the dropdown to Online.

  • Then check the box for Media Recordings.
(You can also check File Uploads if you want them to upload a saved video file instead.)

A Few Tips:

  • Recording directly in Canvas: Students can record using their webcam/microphone when they submit. Just make sure they know to click Record/Upload Media when they go to submit.

  • Large files: If videos are too big, you might suggest they upload to YouTube (unlisted) or Google Drive and share a link.
