As many of you have likely noticed, Google has been rolling out new artificial intelligence features across the tools you use every day, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, and more. These changes are happening at the platform level, meaning Google is building AI directly into Workspace as part of its standard service for all institutions. Beginning in January 2025, Google made this a permanent part of all Workspace editions, so these features now appear for users whether or not an institution specifically requested them.

Google does allow users to opt-out of some of the AI tools in Workspace. Disabling Google Workspace smart features will remove many AI processes that have been built into Workspace. 

Disabling Google Workspace Smart Features on Desktop

Log into Gmail in your web browser. Click Settings > See all settings.

Under the General Tab, scroll down and uncheck Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. Then click Manage Workspace smart feature settings.

Uncheck Smart features in Google Workspace and Smart features in other Google products. Then click Save.

Disabling Google Workspace Smart Features on Mobile

1. Open the Gmail app .
2. At the top left, tap Menu   Settings.
3. Under “General,” tap Data privacy.
4. Tap Google Workspace smart features.
5. Turn a smart feature setting on or off:
   • Smart features in Google Workspace
   • Smart features in other Google products
6. At the top right, tap Done.
