Canvas - Copying a course using the Course Import tool

To copy content from another Canvas course using the Course Import tool follow these steps: 

  • In Course Navigation for the new class, click the Settings link.

  • On. the right side of the page click the Import Course Content link.

  • In the Content Type drop-down menu, select the Copy a Canvas Course option.

  • In the Search for a course box, start typing the name of the course you would like to access. Courses are ordered alphabetically by most recent term. Click the name of the course when it appears. 

  • If you want to select specific content, click the Select specific content  button. If you choose the Select specific content option, you will be able to click the content you want to import after you review the remaining page options (after you click import.)

  • If you want to adjust the due dates associated with the course events and assignments, click the Adjust events and due dates checkbox.

  • When importing content, a message displays explaining that importing the same course content more than once overwrites any existing content in the course.

  • When you are ready to import, or ready to choose specific items to import, click the Import button. After you start importing the content, the import selection cannot be canceled.  If you make a mistake please reach out to Educational Technology.

  • The Current Jobs section displays the status of your import (1). Running reports display a progress bar indicating the time remaining to complete the import.

  • If you chose to select specific content in your course, the current job will show as Waiting for Select (2) which means you must select the content you want to import. The import with pause until you click the Select Content button and choose the content you want to import, 

Important details:

  • Importing the same course more than once may have unintended consequences. If you import content into a new course, edit the content in the new course, and later import the previous content again, the imported content will override the existing content.

  • If you copy all content, which includes course settings, the grade posting policy from the original course will override the grade posting policy in the new course. 

  • Unless you choose to remove dates, imported Assignments and Quizzes will retain the dates from the original course. You will need to edit these dates in your new course.
  • Be cautious when copying Announcements and Calendar entries, as those likely were specific to a previous course.

  • You can only copy content from courses in which you are an instructor. If you would like to copy another instructor’s course, they must grant permission to add you to the course as an instructor, or allow Educational Technology to import their content to your course.
