Overview
Respondus LockDown Browser is a testing tool that provides a more secure environment for online exams. When students access an assessment using LockDown Browser, they are prevented from navigating to other websites or applications and from using certain computer functions while the exam is in progress. Faculty can use it to help maintain exam security and academic integrity in online and in-person courses.
What it does
Once a student launches LockDown Browser to take a test, the exam fills the entire screen and cannot be minimized, resized, or closed until it is submitted for grading. While the test is running, students cannot print, copy, take screenshots, or use keyboard shortcuts. They also cannot open other applications, visit other websites, or use messaging, screen sharing, or screen recording tools since LockDown Browser automatically blocks hundreds of these programs while active.
What it does not do
LockDown Browser on its own does not use a webcam or record students in any way. It simply limits what a student can access on their own device during a test. It also should only be used for taking the quiz itself, not for general use elsewhere in Canvas.
Who uses it
Instructors turn LockDown Browser on for a specific quiz in Canvas when they want extra assurance that students are not using outside resources or other applications during a test. Students then install LockDown Browser on their own device and use it any time a quiz requires it.
System requirements
LockDown Browser works on Windows and Mac computers, as well as Chromebooks and iPads when an instructor has enabled that option. It is built on the same open source framework as Chrome, so a separate Chrome installation is not needed for it to work.
