SensusAccess is a tool that turns documents into formats that are easier to read, hear, or use with assistive technology. You upload a file, pick the format you want, and SensusAccess sends back a converted version. There is nothing to install.
Who can use it
SensusAccess is available to all students, faculty, and staff.
- Students can turn readings into audio to listen on the go, convert a scanned PDF so a screen reader can read it, or turn a document into an ebook for a phone or tablet.
- Faculty can convert scanned readings and slides into more accessible versions before sharing them with students.
- Staff can convert handouts, forms, and other documents into formats that work better for the people using them.
You do not need a disability or an accommodation to use SensusAccess. Anyone who would rather listen than read, or who wants text they can search and resize, is welcome to use it.
Two ways to use it
- The web form. Go to the SensusAccess Document Converter page, upload a file, and the converted version arrives by email. This works for any document, whether or not it is in Canvas.
- Inside Canvas. When SensusAccess is turned on in a course, a small circle with an S appears next to files and pages. Click it to convert that item without leaving Canvas.
What you can turn a document into
- MP3 audio to listen to a reading
- Ebooks (EPUB or MOBI) to read on a phone, tablet, or ereader
- Digital Braille for Braille displays and embossers
- Tagged PDF, Word, and other text formats so screen readers can read the content and you can search, copy, or edit it
What it does not do
SensusAccess is a strong first step, but it is not a complete accessibility fix. The quality of what comes out depends on the quality of what goes in, so a blurry or crooked scan will give you a rough result. Always look over the converted file before sharing it or relying on it.
