Moving Data from OneDrive to Google Drive.

How to Move Your OneDrive Files to Google Drive

Before January 19, 2027, move any files you want to keep from OneDrive to Google Drive. Files remaining in OneDrive after this date will be permanently lost.

Option 1: Download and Re-upload (Recommended for most users)

  1. Download your files from OneDrive

  • Go to office.com and sign in with your Puget Sound username and password.

  • Open OneDrive.

  • Select the files or folders you want to keep (click the checkbox on each, or press Ctrl/Cmd+A to select all).

  • Click Download. OneDrive will package your selection into a .zip file.

  1. Unzip the downloaded file

  • Locate the downloaded .zip file (usually in your Downloads folder).

  • Right-click (Windows) or double-click (Mac) and select Extract All or Unzip.

  1. Upload to Google Drive

  • Go to drive.google.com and sign in with your Puget Sound Google account.

  • Click New > File upload or Folder upload.

  • Select the unzipped files/folders from your computer.

  • Wait for the upload to complete — larger files or folders may take a few minutes.

  1. Verify your files

  • Confirm all files appear correctly in Google Drive and open a few to check they're intact before deleting anything from OneDrive.

Option 2: Drag and Drop (if you have both drives open locally)

If you have the OneDrive desktop app and Google Drive for Desktop both installed and synced:

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).

  2. Locate your OneDrive folder and your Google Drive folder side by side.

  3. Select the files you want to move and drag them from the OneDrive folder into the Google Drive folder.

  4. Wait for the sync icon to confirm the upload is complete in Google Drive.

Tips

  • Large amounts of data: If you have many files or large files (videos, datasets), start early — uploads can take time depending on your connection.

  • Shared files: If others have shared files with you in OneDrive, save your own copy before access is removed, as you won't be able to retrieve it afterward.

  • Need help? If you have a large volume of files or run into issues, contact the Service Desk at [contact info] for assistance.
